Sometimes we don’t make stuff perfectly (hey, we’re only human!), and while they’re acceptable enough to own, they’re probably not good enough to sell. So we’re giving one away.

This lemon coloured baby has some crazing in the glazing, and the concrete had some, err.. shall we say ‘consistency issues’. It’s all good, it’s rustic! And it’s free!

Mophie Helium First Impressions

After much waiting to see what Mophie would release of the iPhone 5, I pulled the trigger and pre-ordered the Helium. I’d been debating about getting a case for a while. but never have as i’ve always run my iPhone naked (my friends don’t know how I do it, I don’t know how they run cases… but that’s a post for another time).

I’ve always been interested by the Mophie cases as they protected and the battery would mean if I forgot to plug the iphone in overnight I could make it through the rest of the next day without too much trouble. The minimalist in me also liked the fact that I wouldn’t have to take my lighting cable with me everywhere, so it integrated 2/3 things (phone-cable-external battery) into one, I like.

This is purely a first impression of the Mophie Helium that arrived this afternoon. Will write up a more in-depth review sometime next week once i’ve had a change to put it through its paces. I’m not going to get into the battery size criticism (everyone seems to be bitching about) until i’ve tried it but after the break there’s some observations from a design and function stand point.

Size - not as bad as I thought it would be, sits quite nice in the hand, fits in my pocket pretty easy too. If people can carry galaxy S3’s you can carry this.

Weight - not super heavy but I wouldn’t want it to be much more than it is , we will see if the trade off for an extra days battery (my theroy base on my current use etc) is worth the weight penalty.

Materials, Fit & Finish- Not bad at all. The matte finish is nice and is a nice compliment to the black and slate of the iPhone The 2 halves clip together quite nicely and it holds the phone securely. Only questionable part of the case i’ve found is the standby/on switch for the case, it takes a bit to move and it seems a little flimsy… a nice metal/alloy switch would make a world of difference.

Function - buttons work as they should, haven’t had a chance to try out the charging capabilities but will write about that more next week. The only gripe I have is the depth of the headphone jack. They provide an extension out of the box but, if they cut out a bit of the back corner it would have been much better and would mean one less thing to carry…

What I would redesign - being an design/ architecture student I always look at what could be changed or redesigned to make a better product, in my opinion. Not saying what is currently there is bad, I may have done it differently

The aforementioned power switch- an alloy or metal switch that was slightly easier to slide or more confidence inspiring to use would be nice.
The Power indicator- its quite obvious looks to Apples design on their laptops if they made the led’s smaller like on the Macbooks that would be nice, not crucial but it would be a nice detail.
The bottom section of the case- it would have been a nice touch if it was made out of aluminium much like the Macbooks and also would solve the 2 previous bullet points without much trouble. It would have also been interesting from a tactile standpoint too, and generate some interest.
The headphone solution - it works but I might have done it differently.

Overall Impressions so far - No a bad case but not the case to end all cases either, but it does quite a good job. Check in in a week to see a more in-depth review/critique .

(and if you got this far thanks for reading- my writing is terrible and it probably doesn’t make much sense, hahaha)
